ABOUT

FASHION WITH A PAST. Maura Tangum Studio was founded in 2020 by Maura Tangum, debuting with one-of-a-kind up-cycled and hand-sewn unisex outerwear garments made in Atlanta, G.A. The antique and vintage materials Tangum incorporates into her work are sourced from Charlotte, Cornelius, and Gastonia, North Carolina. While most textiles used date to the 20th century, some rare materials date as far back as the mid-nineteenth century. The textiles included in the construction and design of each garment are traditionally domestic or sartorial, and include former quilts, pillow cases, placemats, sheets, curtains, tablecloths, napkins, handkerchiefs, scarves, and dishtowels.

While some garments are hand-made completely from scratch, others are made using a “reupholstery” approach, in which a vintage jacket is carefully cleaned and altered for a modern fit and used as a “base” on which surface decoration including stitching and appliqué is added to create the final product–a new and completely unique garment. The result of this creative process is a fresh yet old-school collection of one-off unisex pieces made from reimagined textiles and silhouettes. Through the collection, Tangum seeks to preserve and celebrate historical textiles with an eye towards modernization while simultaneously promoting sustainable fashion–NEW JACKETS FROM OLD FABRICS, WITH A SMALL ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT.
